Creative software, explained
Photoshop edits photos and images. Illustrator draws logos, icons and anything that needs to scale. InDesign lays out brochures, menus and reports. Premiere edits video. Creative Cloud Pro bundles all of them, plus After Effects, Acrobat Pro and Adobe Fonts.
You don't need all of them. If you're making social posts from templates, Canva is faster and cheaper. Pay for Adobe when you need precision, print-ready files, or you hand work to agencies and printers.

What to look for
Photo editing
Retouching, product shots, cutting out backgrounds and Generative Fill. That's Photoshop's job, and nothing else comes close.

🔥 My verdict of the week
Every Adobe app in one plan, with Acrobat Pro, Adobe Fonts and the full generative AI allowance. I've broken down every plan, the cheaper single-app routes, and exactly who should (and shouldn't) pay for the full suite.
What I like
✓ Every Adobe app in one plan
✓ Industry-standard files
✓ Adobe Fonts included
What I'd watch out for
– Annual contract, early exit fee
– Overkill if you use one app
– Price rises after offers end

Best for
Multi-app designers
Before you pay for anything
01
Buy one app, not the suite
If you only use Photoshop or Illustrator, a single-app plan at $22.99 a month costs about a third of Creative Cloud Pro.
02
Get Photoshop with Lightroom
The Photography plan includes Photoshop, Lightroom and 1TB of storage for $19.99 a month, cheaper than Photoshop on its own.
03
Check the education offer
Students and teachers get Creative Cloud Pro at a big discount for the first year. Check if you qualify before paying full price.
04
Read the cancellation terms
Annual plans billed monthly are a contract. Cancel early and you can pay a fee, so pick the plan you'll actually keep.
05
Try the free alternatives
Affinity is free with a Canva account and DaVinci Resolve has a free version. Test them on a real job before you subscribe.
My promise
Every verdict tells you who a tool is for, who should skip it, and what it really costs. If I earn a commission, I say so.
How to choose
01
List the jobs you do weekly
Photos, logos, layouts or video? Write down the work, then match each job to one app.
02
Check who you hand files to
If printers, agencies or clients expect Adobe files, that settles it. If not, the cheaper tools are worth a proper look.
03
Trial it on a real project
Use the free trial on actual client or business work. If it doesn't save you time within a week, don't subscribe.

Creative tools FAQ
Your Adobe questions, answered.
Is Adobe Creative Cloud worth it for a small business?
Only if you need professional output. For social posts and simple marketing graphics, Canva is faster and cheaper. Adobe earns its cost when you regularly retouch photos, design logos, lay out print or edit video.
Which Adobe plan should I buy?
One app: a single-app plan at $22.99 a month. Mainly photos: the Photography plan at $19.99 a month with Lightroom. Three or more apps: Creative Cloud Pro at $69.99 a month.
Can I cancel Adobe at any time?
Not without cost on the annual plan billed monthly. Cancelling early can trigger a fee. Paying month to month gives you flexibility but costs noticeably more.
Is Canva a real alternative to Photoshop?
For templates, social posts and quick graphics, yes. For retouching, compositing and print-ready image work, no. Plenty of businesses use both.
Is there a free alternative to Adobe?
Yes. Affinity is free with a Canva account and covers photo, vector and layout work. DaVinci Resolve has a capable free version for video. Neither opens every Adobe file perfectly, so test with your own work.
